Resumen
We present a reassessment of the harvestman fauna of the family Gonyleptidae in the Magallanes Region of Chile, including a detailed redescription of Eubalta planiceps (Guérin-Méneville, 1842). Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, examination of museum collection, and records from citizen science platforms, we evaluated all species historically reported from the area. Our results indicate that most previous records correspond to misidentifications or mislabeled material, or represent junior synonyms, restricting the confirmed Magellanic fauna to Eubalta planiceps and Eubalta phillipsoni (Roewer, 1961), comb. nov. Morphological analysis supports the synonymy of the genus Chilegyndes Roewer, 1961 with Eubalta Roewer, 1923, and allows a detailed description of the external and genital morphology of the male of E. planiceps. We further discuss the morphological affinities of Eubalta with the genera Fonckia and Purrankia within the recently proposed Fonckia group. Our findings indicate that the Gonyleptidae fauna in Magallanes is poorly represented, highlighting the need for new systematic surveys to properly assess its diversity and distribution in southern South America.
