Abstract
Local knowledge of communities has been essential for understanding and managing socio-ecological systems throughout history. However, on many occasions, this cultural heritage has been forgotten or marginalized, undermining identity, the local economy, and the appreciation and management capacity of natural resources. Through an ethnographic approach, this study conducted in Valdivia, Chile, rescues knowledge related to the fishing of a peculiar fish called puye (Galaxias maculatus), which has been part of the livelihood and cultural heritage of southern Chilean communities since pre-Columbian times. Here, we present detailed descriptions of puye fishing using the “chine,” a conical net fixed along the coastline in strategic enclaves known as “pesqueros.” This particular fishing technique is based on a detailed understanding of the behavior of juvenile fish during their migration from the estuary inland—a form of customary knowledge that also enriches the scarce biological understanding of puye in Chile. Additionally, the local management of pesqueros shaped an oral cartography that defined current navigational toponymy, based on tacit rules and customary rights. Today, puye fishing and its cultural significance are neglected and forgotten. However, joint efforts among local communities, researchers, and authorities—promoting education, sustainable use, and respect for traditional practices—could help reverse this situation. These efforts would not only revitalize the cultural identity associated with puye but also highlight and safeguard the ecological health of Patagonian estuaries.
