Abstract
The American mink (Neogale vison) has expanded across subantarctic channels and fjords, yet its presence and ecology in the remote western channels remain poorly documented. This study reports twenty-five new records from that region, obtained through direct observations during archaeological field campaigns and opportunistic information provided by artisanal fishers, including photographs and videos collected between 2022 and 2024. These records fill gaps in areas previously cataloged as lacking data and, according to local fishers’ accounts, suggest a recent colonization. Observed behaviors include opportunistic boarding of fishing vessels to consume bait and the occurrence of unusually white individuals. Fishers also reported anecdotal predation of mink by the striated caracara (Phalcoboenus australis). Confirmation of mink expansion into this “last frontier,” which hosts extensive protected areas and vulnerable seabird colonies, poses serious conservation challenges. We discuss implications for seabird colonies and for coexistence with native mustelids, highlighting critical knowledge gaps regarding interactions with the marine otter (Lontra felina), an endangered species. We recommend strengthening monitoring within protected areas, integrating community-based observations with institutional logistical support, and advancing targeted control measures to mitigate impacts on subantarctic coastal ecosystems.
