Abstract

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the conservation status of species according to abundances or range sizes. Criterion B is applied according to the Extent of Occurrence (EOO) or Area of Occupancy (AOO). In Chile, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), following IUCN criteria, classified Galictis cuja (Molina, 1782) as Least Concern. After observing the presence of G. cuja in Chile, arranged in three sections, the objective was to determine the potential niche in Chile, the EOO and the AOO; to establish the conservation status. The potential niche model was elaborated with MaxEnt software. The EOO was calculated with the alpha envelope method and the AOO, by occupying the records in 2x2 km cells. The area of the potential niche was 225912 km2. The EOO was 166801 km2. The AOO was 392 km2. The EOO of G. cuja estimated by the MMA was 253631 km2 greater than that found in this study. The AOO of the MMA was 535232 km2 greater than that of this study. Overestimating the EOO and AOO leads to erroneous interpretations and misapplication of IUCN criterion B. Based on the AOO of G. cuja in this study (392 km2) the species should be classified as Endangered for Chile (Criterion B2a). It is recommended that the conservation status of species based on distribution criteria be reviewed.
