Abstract

The marine wetlands of the Los Lagos Region, in southern Chile, are recognized ecosystems of international importance for the conservation of migratory shorebirds. However, most of these sites are unprotected, urgently requiring progress in their protection and management. Thus, the objective of this work is to make a diagnosis on the state of knowledge of the marine wetland of Chamiza (41°30'S, 72°50'W), by literature review, together with a participatory identification and prioritization of threats for the conservation of migratory shorebirds in this site. The studies published on the marine wetland of Chamiza (n = 24), cover documents from 1987 to 2019. Most have focused on waterbirds, followed by marine invertebrates that inhabit the tidal flat. The marine wetland of Chamiza has an important conservation value for migratory shorebirds, supporting more than 10% of the population of Limosa haemastica which breeds in Alaska, and that each year migrates to the marine wetlands of southern Chile. 14 threats were identified for the conservation of migratory shorebirds in the marine wetland of Chamiza. The main threats are associated with the effect of residential development, favoring the abundance of dogs and generating solid and liquid waste in the environment. Overall, the results support the idea of a network of insular and continental marine wetlands that interact between themselves, through migratory shorebirds.
