Abstract

The benthic communities of Chilean Patagonia present a high biodiversity in response to the variability of environmental conditions, food sources and habitats. This study characterized an epibenthic community with high values ??of species richness, dominated by suspension feeders distributed in different types of habitats along the Puyuhuapi fjord. Multiple environmental variables defined the composition and distribution of these communities; being the depth and the inclination and type of substrate determinant for the epifauna. In this fjord, the trophic group associated with suspension feeders represent a functional trait that may have important ecosystem functions associated with carbon and nutrient cycles. For this reason, the spatio-temporal and functional information of these communities is a fundamental input for monitoring these ecosystems, especially in fjords with a high impact of anthropic activities such as salmon farming.
